Sophia Sobers - "Liminal Conjunction"

February 10 - March 23, 2017

Opening Reception:  Thursday, February 9, 4:00 - 6:00 pm

Liminal Conjunction is a new series of work by Sophia Sobers. Liminal Conjunction is the exploration of the transitory and evolving nature of plants and our connection to them as we navigate everyday spaces.

The creation and display of the work relays back to this show's title as aspects of this artistic investigation. The liminality of in-between spaces and transitional states of being for powerful moments of creation and the conjunction of disparate objects and structures in time and space to create a temporary unification of object-ideas. Both parts look to the power of the artist as a creator who often combines objects and imagery as part of their artistic language. It touches upon the transitory nature of creation in the development of these visual languages.

In Sobers’ work, the plant becomes the quintessential embodiment in the union of earthly and etheric matters through root systems that dig into the ground and foliage that reaches into the sky to transmute air and light into energy and food.

Paper cutouts, concrete, quartz, selenite, astro-turf, insulation foam, light, and wood are elements in this installation that will be used to create a state of ascension for the plant. As we ascend into new digital realities, it is only necessary to create a representational space for plants to ascend into their own altered realities and to embody what that transitional moment may look like.
