HPS Artist-in-Residence Program

Opportunity

The Department of History and Philosophy of Science (HPS) establishes a fall artist-in-residence program with the Department of Studio Arts (SA), inviting SA majors or minors to develop unique creative work for exhibition in the public areas of the Department of HPS, in response to explorations in subject matter and / or methods of philosophy of science with a faculty mentor. Reasonable material and presentation funding will be available and participating artists will receive a $500 award at the end of the term, upon project completion. A description of HPS faculty research follows.

Expectations

Selected artists are expected to:

  • Register for SA 1902 Directed Research (variable credit) in the Fall- term – the complexity of the project and/or larger body of work will be determined with input from SA faculty member who will advise the project.
  • Schedule a meeting with mentoring HPS faculty and advising SA faculty by October 2024, to establish parameters for regular schedule of meetings and goals for project completion by the end of the Fall 2024 term.
  • Engage with HPS faculty mentor throughout the term to explore HPS research or visits to suitably chosen HPS classes.
  • Develop and produce unique artwork in response to HPS research with consistent progress, while meeting with sponsoring SA faculty for feedback.
  • Exhibit the resulting creative work in the main office of HPS at the department’s discretion for a period of one year, January 2025– January 2026.

Proposal Requirements

  • A two-page proposal that articulates anticipated creative work linked to HPS research, the header of this document should include contact information.
  • A one-page budget that estimates material, as well as presentation expenses (maximum of $500)
  • Brief letter of reference from sponsoring SA faculty member
  • A work sample pdf document that includes 3-5 images of creative work with brief description (title, media, dimensions, year of completion), file size should not exceed 20MB
  • Proposal files should also include: a current resume and an unofficial transcript.
  • Students should be in good academic standing and have declared the major or minor in Studio Arts
  • HPS.SA proposal files should be uploaded to a OneDrive folder, with a link sent to Matt Ceraso at mrc118@pitt.edu
