Fall 2025 Opportunity
The Gender Sexuality and Women’s Study Program (GSWS) and Studio Art Department (SA) announce the next cycle of the fall artist-in-residence program, inviting majors and minors of SA and GSWS to develop unique creative work for exhibition, in response to explorations in subject matter and / or methods relating to topics pertaining to GSWS studies with faculty mentors in both GSWS and Studio Arts.
Reasonable material and presentation funding will be available and participating artists will receive a $500 award at the end of the term, upon project completion. Participating artists will also receive a 1 credit independent study position in GSWS in addition to a 1 credit direct research position within Studio Arts.
Expectations
Selected students are expected to:
- Register for SA 1902 Directed Research for 1 elective credit in Studio Arts, and for GSWS 1901 Independent Study for 1 credit in GSWS for the Fall term – the complexity of the project and/or larger body of work will be determined with input from GSWS and SA faculty member who will advise the project.
- Schedule a meeting with mentoring / advising GSWS and SA faculty by September 1, 2025, to establish parameters for regular schedule of meetings and goals for project completion by the end of the fall term.
- Engage with GSWS and SA faculty mentor throughout the fall term to explore crossovers in GSWS and SA research or visits to suitably chosen GSWS or SA classes.
- Develop and produce unique art work in response to GSWS research with consistent progress, while meeting bi-monthly with mentoring faculty in GSWS and SA for feedback.
- Engage with the Hillman Library Archives for research purposes and work with archivists to curate a display of historical items that relate to your research for display.
- Exhibit the resulting creative work in a location TBD for a period of one year, and no less than one semester from January 2026– December 2026.
Proposal Requirements
- A two-page proposal that articulates anticipated creative work linked to GSWS and SA research, the header of this document should include contact information
- A one-page budget that estimates material, as well as presentation expenses (maximum of $500)
- Brief letter of reference from sponsoring SA or GSWS faculty member
- Applicants can submit either:
- A work sample pdf document that includes 3-5 images of creative work that can span a full range of artistic mediums, including but not limited to, sculpture, installation, painting, drawing, video, animation, performance, printmaking, photography, new media and multimedia approaches, with a brief description (title, media,dimensions, year of completion).
- A written sample pdf document that included 5-10 pages of conceptually related academic written work, poetry, prose, or other written materials. * file size should not exceed 20MB.
- Proposal files should also include: a current resume and an unofficial transcript
- Students should be in good academic standing and have declared the major or minor in Studio Arts or GSWS
- Deadline for proposals: Friday, February 28, 2025 by 5:00 pm.
